~ Sacramento, California - Governor Gavin Newsom has declared May 4-10, 2025 as "Children's Mental Health Awareness Week" in an effort to bring attention to the urgent issue of children's mental health. The proclamation was issued today and can be found below.
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in children's mental health diagnoses and concerns over the impact of social media on young minds. Studies have shown that adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media are at a higher risk for mental health problems. Additionally, suicide rates among young adults in California have been on the rise, accounting for 20% of all deaths in this age range.
Governor Newsom recognizes the importance of addressing these issues and providing support for children struggling with mental health. In his proclamation, he states that "we must check in with our kids and take action to provide those struggling with the support they need." California is committed to providing resources and services to help children thrive both physically and mentally.
The cornerstone of this effort is the Master Plan for Kids' Mental Health, which coordinates child-serving systems and prioritizes prevention and early intervention. The Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI), designed by youth and families, is also working towards transforming California's behavioral health system.

In his proclamation, Governor Newsom states that "mental health is as important to our overall well-being as physical health." In other news, Governor Newsom announced appointments to the California African American Museum Board of Directors and attended the annual California Highway Patrol Memorial Ceremony honoring fallen officers. He also shared the results of a state investment in preventing and prosecuting organized retail crime.
