~ Sacramento, California - In a move to expand access to fertility services, Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation today that requires large group health care service plan contracts and disability insurance policies to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of infertility and fertility services, including in vitro fertilization (IVF). The bill, SB 729, was introduced by Senator Caroline Menjivar (D-Van Nuys) and aims to help individuals and couples who are struggling with infertility.

Governor Newsom stated in a signing message that California is a proud reproductive freedom state and believes in increasing access to fertility services for those who want to start a family. He also criticized Republicans for blocking legislation that would establish a nationwide right to IVF for the second time this year.

"California is proud to help every Californian make their own choices about the family they want," said Governor Newsom.

This action comes as part of California's leadership on reproductive rights. Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade over two years ago, Governor Newsom has worked with the California Legislature to make California a national leader for reproductive freedom. He is also a founding member of the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, a nonpartisan coalition of 23 Governors committed to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom.

He appointed Dr. Fei-Fei Li, known as the "godmother of AI," as well as Tino Cuéllar, member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Social and Ethical Implications of Computing Research, and Jennifer Tour Chayes, Dean of the School of Information at UC Berkeley, to lead these initiatives.

Governor Newsom also signed a package of bills designed to support California's veterans by streamlining and simplifying procedures that assist them and their families.

Furthermore, he signed legislation to address concerns with the processed food industry and increase youth access to healthy, local foods. This package of bills aims to increase participation in food assistance programs, protect children from overly processed foods, reduce food waste, and improve access to healthy, locally grown foods.

With these actions, Governor Newsom continues to prioritize the health and well-being of Californians while also advocating for reproductive rights and supporting veterans.
