~ SACRAMENTO - In a move to protect California consumers from rising gas prices, the Assembly has passed Governor Gavin Newsom's proposal in a special session called by the Governor. The bill, ABx2-1, will now head to the Senate for consideration.
Authored by Assemblymembers Gregg Hart and Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, the bill aims to prevent gasoline price spikes by requiring oil refiners to maintain a minimum inventory of fuel. This will help avoid supply shortages that often lead to higher prices for consumers and increased profits for the industry. Additionally, the bill would authorize the California Energy Commission to require refiners to plan for resupply during maintenance outages.
Governor Newsom expressed his gratitude towards the Assembly for their support in this effort, stating that gas price spikes have cost Californians over $2 billion in the past year alone. He emphasized that this issue needs to be addressed in order to ease financial burdens on families who are forced to make tough decisions between fueling up or putting food on the table.

Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas also commended his colleagues for their work on this bill, stating that it not only addresses gas prices but also protects industry workers and frontline communities. He stressed that this is just one step towards lowering the cost of living for all Californians.
The bill has received widespread support from various groups including mayors, local leaders, consumer organizations, environmental advocates, labor unions, business leaders and consumer groups. Last week, Governor Newsom and supporters met to discuss how gas price spikes affect everyday lives and why this proposal is necessary.
In other news related to California's efforts towards a better future, a recent joint enforcement operation led by the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) resulted in the seizure and destruction of millions of dollars worth of illegally cultivated cannabis. The operation also led to confiscation of toxic pesticides in Alameda County.

Furthermore, Californians can look forward to better parks, healthier fish and wildlife, and more clean transportation in their communities as the state has received $360 million from the Biden-Harris Administration. This funding will help improve the overall quality of life for Californians.
In a separate effort to combat drug trafficking, the California National Guard's (Cal Guard) Counterdrug Task Force has seized over 5,000 pounds of fentanyl powder and 9.6 million pills containing fentanyl at California's ports of entry since January. This highlights the state's commitment to keeping dangerous drugs off the streets and protecting its citizens.
With these recent developments, it is evident that California is taking proactive measures to address various issues and improve the lives of its residents. The passing of Governor Newsom's proposal in the Assembly is just one example of how the state is working towards a better future for all Californians.
