~ SACRAMENTO - In a move to protect California consumers from rising gas prices, the Assembly has passed Governor Gavin Newsom's proposal in a special session called by the Governor. The bill, ABx2-1, will now head to the Senate for consideration.
Authored by Assemblymembers Gregg Hart and Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, the bill aims to prevent gasoline price spikes by requiring oil refiners to maintain a minimum inventory of fuel. This will help avoid supply shortages that often lead to higher prices for consumers and increased profits for the industry. Additionally, the bill would authorize the California Energy Commission to require refiners to plan for resupply during maintenance outages.
Governor Newsom expressed his gratitude towards the Assembly for their support in this effort, stating that gas price spikes have cost Californians over $2 billion in the past year alone. He emphasized that this issue needs to be addressed in order to ease financial burdens on families who are forced to make tough decisions between fueling up or putting food on the table.
