~ Sacramento - In a statement released today, Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom expressed their shock and sorrow over the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. The incident, which occurred earlier in the day, has left families and children traumatized and a community in mourning.
The Governor and First Partner extended their deepest condolences to those affected by the shooting. They emphasized that worshippers should not have to fear for their safety while practicing their faith. "Hate has no place in California," they stated firmly, "and we will not tolerate acts of terror or intimidation against communities of faith."
The couple also thanked law enforcement officers and first responders for their swift action in protecting the children and worshippers during the attack. They assured the San Diego Muslim community that California stands with them during this difficult time.

The California Highway Patrol and the Governor's Office of Emergency Services are currently on scene, working with local and federal partners to provide support and resources.
In other news, a California superior court has ordered the city of Huntington Beach to pay penalties totaling $160,000 for repeated violations of state housing law. The court also ruled that an additional $50,000 per month will be added to this amount starting in June.
Governor Newsom announced several appointments today as well. Jonathan Klein has been appointed as Executive Director of the Housing Development and Finance Committee. Klein brings with him a wealth of experience as the Founder and Principal of Community Finance Solutions.
Lastly, Governor Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom paid tribute to Rita Semel, a civic and interfaith leader who recently passed away. As co-founder of the San Francisco Interfaith Council, Semel was known for bringing people together from different backgrounds to promote unity within communities.
As California continues to face challenges such as hate crimes and housing issues, Governor Newsom remains committed to addressing these issues head on with compassion and determination.
