SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced the following appointments:
Hugh "Drew" Brereton, 44, of Sacramento, has been appointed deputy director and chief counsel of the California Department of Public Health. Brereton has served as deputy director and chief counsel for the Office of Enforcement at the Department of Managed Health Care since 2016, where he was assistant chief counsel from 2014 to 2016 and an attorney III from 2008 to 2014. Brereton was an attorney at Katchis, Harris and Yempuku from 2002 to 2008 and at Pagliero & Associates from 2001 to 2002. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California Davis, School of Law. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $188,568. Brereton is a Democrat.
Norma Cumpian, 50, of Los Angeles, has been appointed to the Board of State and Community Corrections. Cumpian has served as the manager for women and non-binary services at the Anti-Recidivism Coalition since 2016. She was a volunteer coordinator at the Center for Restorative Justice Works from 2010 to 2015. Cumpian is a member of the Los Angeles County Gender Responsive Advisory Committee. She also helped organize and lead Convicted Women Against Abuse, a self-help organization that brings women a better understanding of domestic violence. This position requires Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Cumpian is a Democrat.

Karen Yamamoto, 70, of Sacramento, has been reappointed to the California State Teachers' Retirement Board, where she has served since 2017. Yamamoto was a second grade teacher for the Washington Unified School District from 1992 to 2007. She is a member of the Japanese American Citizens League, Florin Chapter, the Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project and the Buddhist Church of Sacramento. Yamamoto earned a Master of Arts degree in early childhood education from California State University, Sacramento. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Yamamoto is a Democrat.
