NEW YORK ~ Today, Governor Gavin Newsom of California addressed the United Nations Climate Ambition Summit hosted by the UN Secretary-General. During his address, he highlighted California's climate action on the world stage and called out the oil industry for their continued lies.
Governor Newsom began his remarks by noting that it was in 1945 when the United Nations charter was founded in California, and 22 years later in 1967 when then-conservative Governor Ronald Reagan began the process of leading the modern American environmental movement with the creation of the California Air Resources Board. He also noted that Richard Nixon codified this effort in 1970 with the Clean Air Act.
The Governor went on to explain that California has continued to lead by example in energy efficiency, becoming the first state to establish a firm goal for transitioning to 100% zero-emission vehicles. He also discussed their comprehensive plan to implement ambitious goals and advance their low-carbon, green-growth future.

Governor Newsom then shifted his focus to how despite all of this leadership and ambition, California is still burning up due to wildfires, floods and droughts. He expressed humility and gratitude for being given this opportunity to speak at such an important summit.
The Governor concluded his remarks by calling out the oil industry for their deceit and denial over decades which has created these conditions today. He expressed appreciation for UN Secretary-General's position and moral authority in clarifying what we are up against and our responsibility to do more.
Governor Newsom's address serves as a reminder that we must all come together if we are going to make a difference in combating climate change. It is clear that we must take action now if we are going to have any chance of preserving our planet for future generations.
