~ In an effort to stay ahead of the curve in the ever-evolving world of battery storage technology, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the formation of a new state-level collaborative. This group will bring together experts from various agencies and departments to review the current landscape of battery storage and address safety concerns as batteries become more prevalent in critical infrastructure and everyday life in California.
The collaborative includes representatives from the California Air Resources Board, California Energy Commission, California Public Utilities Commission, CAL FIRE – Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Governor's Office of Emergency Services, and the California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development. With their combined regulatory and industry expertise, they will work towards enhancing battery safety while also promoting innovation in this vital technology.

Governor Newsom recognizes that battery storage is a crucial component of California's clean energy future. As the technology continues to evolve, it is important to prioritize safety and reliability. By working with state experts, the collaborative aims to identify ways to improve battery safety while still pushing for advancements in this field.
One key focus for this group will be reviewing opportunities for enhancing battery safety. This includes examining technology development, best practices for outreach and education, permitting and installation processes for battery projects, inspection and monitoring practices, as well as first responder training and safety protocols. By bringing together multiple agencies that are already working on these areas individually, this collaborative will enhance coordination and streamline efforts towards improving battery safety.

In addition to this new initiative, Governor Newsom has also recently deployed additional Urban Search and Rescue resources to support Hurricane Helene response efforts. As Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane overnight, Governor Newsom recognized the need for additional support and coordinated with California Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) members to assist in impacted areas.
Furthermore, Governor Newsom has signed three bills establishing new state symbols: the Dungeness crab as the state crustacean, the banana slug as the state slug, and the black abalone as the state seashell. These symbols serve as a celebration of California's diverse wildlife and natural resources.
Lastly, Governor Newsom has proclaimed today as Native American Day and signed several bills that support California Native communities. This includes legislation that advances tribal sovereignty, promotes economic development, and protects cultural resources.
As Governor Newsom continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of Californians, these recent initiatives demonstrate his commitment to staying ahead of emerging technologies and supporting diverse communities within the state.
