~ Sacramento, California - On July 11, 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement honoring the fallen Vacaville Police Department Officer Matthew Bowen. The 32-year-old officer tragically lost his life while on duty today.
Governor Newsom and his wife Jennifer expressed their condolences to Officer Bowen's loved ones, friends, and colleagues. They also recognized the bravery of all law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect their communities. The governor stated that Officer Bowen's service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Officer Bowen was fatally injured while initiating a traffic stop when he was struck by a vehicle. The incident is currently under investigation. He joined the Vacaville Police Department in June 2023 after previously serving as an officer with the Concord Police Department. He leaves behind his wife, two sons, parents, and brother.

In honor of Officer Bowen, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.
In other recent news, California has awarded nearly $20 million in grants to support Missing and Murdered Indigenous Person investigations for 18 California Native American tribes. This effort is part of Governor Newsom's commitment to addressing this crisis.
Additionally, in response to the recovery of over 1,100 stolen cars by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Oakland, Governor Newsom has increased the deployment of state law enforcement in the area. This operation also resulted in the seizure of 55 guns linked to crimes and the arrest of 562 suspects in East Oakland.
Furthermore, California continues to prioritize job creation through its tax credit program for film production. Five new television projects will be filming in California for their upcoming seasons, bringing an estimated $386 million into the state's economy and providing employment opportunities for over 15,000 background performers.
