SACRAMENTO ~ Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed his sadness at the passing of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, describing her as a "political giant" and a "role model".

In a statement released today, Governor Newsom said that Senator Feinstein was "many things - a powerful, trailblazing U.S. Senator; an early voice for gun control; a leader in times of tragedy and chaos". He also described her as a "dear friend" and "lifelong mentor" to him and his wife Jennifer, as well as their daughters.

The Governor praised Senator Feinstein's tenacity and grace, noting that she broke down barriers and glass ceilings but never lost her belief in the spirit of political cooperation. He also highlighted her achievements in office, saying that she should be remembered for what she did for California and America with the power she earned.

Governor Newsom concluded his statement by saying that there was nobody who possessed the strength, gravitas and fierceness of Senator Feinstein, adding that he and his wife were deeply saddened by her passing.
