~ Sacramento, California - Governor Gavin Newsom has declared June 2025 as "Immigrant Heritage Month" in the State of California. This proclamation recognizes and celebrates the contributions of immigrants and their families to the state's economy, culture, and society.
In a statement released today, Governor Newsom emphasized the vital role that immigrants play in sustaining California's economy. As the world's fourth-largest economy, California relies on the ideas, heritage, and history brought by immigrants from around the world. From education to innovation, public safety to health, immigrants have made significant contributions to every aspect of life in the state.
However, Governor Newsom also acknowledged the challenges faced by immigrant communities in today's political climate. He condemned the indiscriminate immigration enforcement that has targeted long-time residents who have contributed to their communities and paid taxes. He also spoke out against hateful rhetoric that seeks to divide people based on false information and fear.

The governor highlighted some statistics that demonstrate the positive impact of immigrants in California. With over 11 million immigrants calling this state home and almost half of all Californian children having at least one immigrant parent, it is clear that immigrant communities are an integral part of California's past, present, and future. Immigrants make up one-third of the state's workforce and account for 40.3% of entrepreneurs. In 2023 alone, immigrant households contributed $61.8 billion in state and local taxes.
Governor Newsom also stressed the need for Congressional action to create a meaningful pathway to citizenship for those who have been living in California for years and contributing positively to their communities.
"Immigrant Heritage Month is a time for all of us to celebrate diversity and recognize how our state and nation are enriched by people from all different backgrounds," said Governor Newsom. "We must continue to support our immigrant communities by promoting economic well-being and talent that contribute to shared prosperity across California."

The governor's proclamation also urges Californians to practice safety and common sense when celebrating the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. With over 600,000 pounds of illegal fireworks recently seized, Governor Newsom reminded people that those who use illegal fireworks will be held accountable.
In addition to declaring Immigrant Heritage Month, Governor Newsom also extended an executive order that makes it easier for survivors of the LA firestorms to retain temporary shelter. This order helps boost temporary housing supply by extending the amount of time survivors can stay in emergency housing.
As California continues to face challenges and uncertainties, Governor Newsom's proclamation serves as a reminder of the valuable contributions made by immigrants and their families. It is a call for unity and support for all communities in the state, regardless of background or origin.
