~ California Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed November 2026 Native American Heritage Month, calling on residents to learn about Native communities and recognize their contributions.
In the proclamation, issued Nov. 6, Newsom said California Native peoples continue to lead and shape the lands and waters of their ancestors. He described the month as an opportunity to reflect on efforts to address historical harms and support Native communities.
Newsom said his administration had returned more than 100,000 acres of land, provided more than $200 million in support, and made additional investments in tribal clean energy and housing. He also cited river restoration, habitat work, cultural burning, broadband, tribal colleges, justice systems and health services as areas of partnership with tribes.

The governor said California is also home to the nation's largest population of Native Americans from across the United States. He noted that people came to the state through federal relocation programs, as children sent to schools intended to erase their identities, and in pursuit of economic opportunity.
The proclamation referred to the election of Deb Haaland as the first Native American woman elected governor and Peggy Flanagan as the first Native American woman elected senator. Newsom described the elections as signs of progress at the state and national levels.
The proclamation was signed in Sacramento on Nov. 6 and attested by California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber.
