~ Sacramento, California - On March 20, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom declared March 19, 2024 as Nowrūz Day in the State of California. This proclamation was made to honor the ancient Persian holiday that marks the beginning of spring and a new year.

Nowrūz, which means "new day," has been celebrated for over 3,000 years on the vernal equinox. It is a time for people around the world to come together and celebrate the renewal of nature. The holiday transcends borders and religion, bringing families and friends together to take part in unique traditions.

One of the central traditions of Nowrūz is setting up a "haft-seen" table with seven symbolic items that all start with the letter "s." These items include somagh (Sumac berries), senjed (dried lotus tree fruit), serkeh (vinegar), seeb (apples), samanoo (sweet pudding), sabzeh (sprouts), and sir (garlic).

The vibrant Iranian community in California plays a significant role in preserving this cultural celebration. Many Iranians living in the United States reside in California, with Los Angeles being home to the largest Iranian community outside of Iran. The city has even earned the nickname "Tehrangeles" due to its thriving Persian culture.

Governor Newsom recognized the contributions of this community and encouraged all Californians to join in celebrating Nowrūz. He stated, "Let us join our friends and neighbors in the Iranian community and all Californians of diverse backgrounds celebrating Nowrūz today, and carry forward its message of living in harmony with nature and each other."

The proclamation was signed by Governor Newsom on March 20, 2024, with Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber also present. In his statement, Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of preserving cultural traditions and promoting diversity in California.

This proclamation comes on the heels of other recent news from Governor Newsom, including his response to President Trump's executive order to eliminate the Department of Education and his statement on preserving the ban on large-capacity gun magazines. Additionally, thousands of Californians have signed up for Engaged California, a new deliberative democracy platform that will focus on the Los Angeles fire recovery as its first use case.

As Californians come together to celebrate Nowrūz, it serves as a reminder of the state's diverse and vibrant communities. Governor Newsom's proclamation highlights the importance of honoring and preserving cultural traditions while promoting unity and harmony among all Californians.
