Governor Newsom: Trump has betrayed us with failed economic policies
What you need to know: President Trump's economic policy is a failure, and American families will pay the price.
SACRAMENTO – Today, the Trump administration's ongoing incompetence and failures continue to be on full display, with a disappointing jobs report showing the worst performance since the COVID-19 pandemic and an August 1 tariff deadline that passed without formal deals from all of our top trading partners.
"While President Trump spends his time gaslighting and golfing, his economic chaos is becoming unbearable for everyday Americans trying to make ends meet. He is ripping apart everything we've built. Trump has betrayed all of us — failing to deliver on his 'golden' economic agenda. Instead of the age of progress, we are all bracing for the impacts of his utter failure."

Trump's SAD job market
Here's what Trump has delivered:
😞 Layoffs at the highest levels since the COVID-19 pandemic
😞 A quarter-million fewer jobs added in May and June than initially reported
😞Gaslighting Americans: Instead of fixing the problem — Trump is calling to fire the official who reported these accurate numbers.
The art of no deals
The Trump administration insisted today's Aug. 1 deadline would be firm, but has continued to shift timelines and expectations – promised deals with top trading partners like Mexico and India remain unfinished.
And what about those countries like Japan for which "deals" have been announced? Trump has boasted that they will result in unprecedented levels of foreign investment into the U.S., but only one of the six agreements negotiated so far has even been signed. These verbal agreements are vague, at best.
The ongoing uncertainty will result in more economic pain. Major consumer brands like Procter & Gamble, Mondelēz, Ford and Hershey are warning in recent earnings calls that the tariffs will drive up costs on everyday products from popular snacks to common household items to cars.

Small businesses have also been operating with uncertainty for months, with less ability to weather the storm, adjust supply chains or lobby the federal government for targeted relief. Lost sales and higher input costs, along with greater red tape while importing, means businesses are pulling back on future investments, hiring, building and construction. What's more, they will now have a harder time selling their products and services globally.
Feeling the pain from Trump's failed tariffs policies
President Trump's tariffs policy is harming everyday Americans, who will pay the price of his chaotic trade posture with our allies and partners.
In the first six months of Trump's presidency, the US economy slowed as a result of his policies. American families continue to feel the pain from the impacts of his failed negotiations and increased prices. In the meantime, Trump gave massive tax cuts to his billionaire friends, while ripping healthcare and food assistance away from Americans, and putting costs on the backs of American families.
Even Fox Business set the record straight on Fox News saying: Let's be real clear here. Tariffs cost, they're a tax. That tax often gets passed on to consumers.
Here's the impact that Trump's failed policies will have on California families and businesses:
Standing up for all Americans
On April 16, Governor Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit arguing that President Trump lacks the authority to unilaterally impose tariffs through the International Economic Emergency Powers Act, creating immediate and irreparable harm to California, the world's fourth largest economy, and nation's leading manufacturing and agriculture state. Other courts have already issued decisions against the Trump Administration's use of this authority to impose tariffs.

Here's the impact that Trump's failed policies will have on California families and businesses:
- Families and workers will bear the brunt. Tariffs could cost households $25 billion and lead to a loss of over 64,000 jobs across California.
- Businesses are also paying the price. California firms incurred $11.3 billion in tariff costs from January through May 2025, the highest of any state in the country.
- Global supply chains will continue to be impacted, especially here at home. Recently, the Port of Los Angeles was operating at only 70% capacity due to ongoing tariffs and Southern California saw a 40% decline in job postings related to trade and logistics.
