Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach has recently been recognized as a Certified Age-Friendly Employer (CAFE) by the Age-Friendly Institute. This prestigious distinction acknowledges the city's dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive work environment for individuals aged 50 and above.
Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his pride in the city's commitment to enhancing the lives of its workforce and promoting a workplace where experience and maturity are valued. He stated, "By promoting an age-friendly work environment, we not only attract the best talent, but also strengthen our culture of diversity, inclusivity, and respect."
As a CAFE, the City of Long Beach has implemented policies, practices, and programs that support individuals of all ages. This includes providing meaningful employment opportunities, development programs, and competitive pay. The city also recognizes the value of experience and wisdom gained over time by employees over 50 and prioritizes them based on their proficiency, qualifications, and contributions.

City Manager Tom Modica expressed his gratitude for receiving this certification from the Age-Friendly Institute. He stated that it highlights their commitment to creating an inclusive workplace that values the contributions of employees aged 50 and above. Modica believes that by fostering a diverse and supportive work environment, they can strengthen their workforce and better serve the Long Beach community.
In addition to its equity, respect, and inclusion recruitment practices, the City offers various age-friendly employee benefits. These include active fitness and wellness programs tailored to promote age-appropriate employee wellness and lifestyle; retirement benefits such as low-cost healthcare coverage; life insurance; disability benefits; and an Employee Assistance Program that provides mental health services and eldercare assistance support for family caregivers.
To receive this certification, the City underwent a comprehensive application process with the Age-Friendly Institute. The evaluation covered 12 categories of recognized best practices for age-friendly employers such as recruitment policies, employment practices, and programs.

The Human Resources Department has made significant progress in modernizing and centralizing its processes, resulting in a more efficient and effective operational framework. Director of Human Resources Bryce M.
