~ Long Beach, California - The City of Long Beach Fleet Services has been named the number one fleet in the United States and Canada among leading fleets. This prestigious recognition was announced on May 7, 2024, at the Government Fleet Expo and Conference, hosted by Government Fleet magazine.
Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his pride in the city's achievement, stating, "Our Fleet Services team continues to demonstrate a strong vision and direction, setting the standard for excellence in the field. We are honored to receive this recognition as we continue to advance our services and infrastructure into a greener, more sustainable future."
The Leading Fleets award is designed to highlight top-performing fleet operations and their achievements, regardless of their location or budget. The award ranks fleets by size categories, with Long Beach Fleet Services being selected as the number one overall fleet across all categories. Additionally, it was named the number one large fleet with over 2,300 total vehicles.

One of the notable achievements that contributed to Long Beach's top spot was its efforts in employee retention and recognition. This includes retention bonuses, advanced training courses for employees, a quarterly Fleet MVP peer recognition program, and employee recognition events. The fleet also engages with the community through pathway internships for local college students and donation drives.
Efficiency practices were also recognized as a key factor in Long Beach's success. This includes multi-year contracts with vendors to support streamlined parts, service and vehicle acquisitions. These practices have decreased the amount of time a City fleet vehicle is out of service by eliminating wait times for parts. Additionally, rideshare services are utilized to minimize motor pool operations and efficiently assist employees in bringing fleet vehicles in for service.
Fleet Services' revamped preventive maintenance program was also highlighted as an achievement. The department has continued to invest in electric vehicle infrastructure and new technology as part of its sustainability strategy. Their vision is to achieve the cleanest fleet possible through aggressive implementation of zero-emission vehicles (ZEV). Plans include electrification of over 410 medium and heavy-duty vehicles, with a goal of 100% electric purchases by 2027.
