LOS ANGELES - Californer -- The highly anticipated original score for The People's Joker is now available, featuring the collaborative compositions of Justin Krol & Quinn Scharber, who have composed an evocative and colorful musical experience.
Directed by Vera Drew, The People's Joker is an absurdist, autobiographically-inspired dark comedy that tells the story of Joker the Harlequin, a painfully unfunny aspiring clown who grapples with her gender identity while attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City's sole comedy program in a world where comedy has been outlawed. The film navigates through various styles and mediums, including animation, live-action, and green screen, creating a vivid tapestry of storytelling that is both exhilarating and groundbreaking.
Album Tracklist:
The score is the culmination of nearly five years of collaboration between the duo and director. Two standout tracks for the composers include the "Transgender Discovery" cue, which was originally set to Seal's "Kiss From A Rose" as a temp track but evolved into a completely unique direction that captured the scene's intrigue, wonder, and romance. Another favorite is "Teenage Years," which is steeped in a Pink Floyd-inspired style, blending a 1970s recording aesthetic with the band's distinct psychedelic influence.

Quinn shared, "The music for The People's Joker came together in a really interesting way. It was all done during covid so it was done in fragments. We would work on the music for a scene and then months could go by before the next bit of work would pop up. And the picture would look different each time. Some was animated, some was live action, some green screen etc. so seeing it completed for the first time, the way Vera had envisioned it was exhilarating. I'm very proud to be a part of it and the work Justin and I did for it."
Reflecting on the creative process, Justin added, "Writing the score for The People's Joker was both joyous and challenging—which is the best combination anyone could ask for. We already had a great working relationship with Vera before starting, so we were able to move quickly and get a lot of ideas out, which also allowed us to put our guard down and really try anything. It was super inspiring to just be in the moment and to fly without a net. There's other projects where we've worked that way, but ultimately abandoned the ideas that we felt were too obscure; this wasn't one of those projects."
Beyond The People's Joker, composers Justin and Quinn have forged a powerful partnership, enhancing projects across film, television, commercials, and music. Their versatile portfolio features scoring for the PBS documentary series Wisconsin Foodie, composing the ONYX Collective studio mnemonic for the Oscar-winning Summer of Soul, and creating music for Netflix and Hulu shows. They have also contributed to commercials, including Super Bowl ads for Busch Light featuring Kenny G and Sarah McLachlan. Collaborating with producers such as Pat Sansone, Bill Skibbe, and Alex Newport, they have developed a strong presence in the music industry. Additionally, they have toured extensively, notably with Justin's brother, Mike Krol.
