~ Sacramento, California - In a recent decision, the Ninth Circuit has struck down one of California's key gun safety laws that was approved by voters in 2016. Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed disappointment and frustration with the ruling, stating that it is a setback for the progress made in keeping communities safe from gun violence.
"Strong gun laws save lives - and today's decision is a slap in the face to the progress California has made in recent years," said Governor Newsom. "Californians voted to require background checks on ammunition and their voices should matter."
The law in question required background checks for all ammunition purchases, but the three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit deemed it unconstitutional. This decision has sparked outrage among supporters of stricter gun control measures.
According to most major polls, there is overwhelming bipartisan support for universal background checks and other gun safety measures. A 2023 Fox News poll found that 87% of American voters back criminal background checks for all gun buyers. In California, voters approved background checks for ammunition purchases by a significant margin of 63% to 36%.

Governor Newsom also praised the State Water Board for incorporating the Healthy Rivers and Landscapes Program into the Bay-Delta Plan Update. This program aims to improve environmental conditions while also increasing water supply reliability.
The governor's administration has been actively working towards addressing homelessness in California as well. Through support for local government efforts and state investments, they have been able to make significant progress in reducing homelessness. Last year's point-in-time count showed that California had outperformed the nation by slowing down its rate of homelessness.
In light of critical fire weather conditions forecasted to impact Northern California starting on July 23rd, Governor Newsom has approved predeployment of firefighting resources in Nevada, Sierra, and Plumas counties. This proactive measure aims to prevent or minimize damage caused by potential wildfires.
The governor's office continues to prioritize public safety and address pressing issues facing the state. Despite this setback, Governor Newsom remains committed to implementing effective gun control measures and ensuring the safety of all Californians.
