LOS ANGELES - Californer -- Hard Hitting Look at West, Irving, and Black Antisemitism
Political analyst Earl Ofari Hutchinson jumps hard into the fray over Kayne West, Kyrie Irving and the issue of Black antisemitism. His new book West, Irving and the Never-Ending Debate over Antisemitism offers a penetrating assessment of the tumultuous and rancorous issue of Black antisemitism and racism.
Hutchinson note that Brooklyn Nets basketball star Kyrie Irving's apology for an antisemitic tweet came barely two weeks after mega entertainer Kanye West tweeted, "I'm a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up, I'm going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE The funny thing is I actually can't be Anti-Semitic because black people are actually Jew also You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda."
The reaction to West or "ye" as he renamed himself was predictably swift and ferocious. In West's case, nearly every firm that he had endorsement deals with, which included product labeling, legal representation, sports apparel companies, magazines, and banks, dropped him faster than a hot skillet. The financial hit he took was so great that instantly he allegedly tumbled from being a ranked billionaire to merely a multi-millionaire.

Hutchinson observes, "This is not an overblown or exaggerated issue. As early as the mid-1940s Jewish researchers called the perceived antisemitic remarks and even acts by some Blacks as worrisome. The issue of Black antisemitism exploded into a national debate with many radical Blacks in the 1960s ripping Israel in its conflict with Palestinians. They also castigated Jewish landlords and store owners for alleged exploitation of poor Blacks in ghetto neighborhoods. This criticism touched a chord with many Blacks.
The backlash against Irving and West amply showed that the issue of Black antisemitism continues to touch a raw nerve in America. In West, Irving and the Never-Ending Debate over Black Antisemitism, political analyst, Earl Ofari Hutchinson, takes a balanced but withering laser look at the contentious history of Black-Jewish relations, how and why Black antisemitism became and remains a thorny issue, and why racism and antisemitism are constant grave twin dangers in America.
