SAN FRANCISCO - Californer -- More than four decades after Humphrey the Humpback Whale captured the imagination of Northern California, his remarkable story is inspiring a new children's book—and the timing could hardly be more extraordinary.

Humphrey Jr. Returns, a new children's story by author Jon Robert Quinn, revisits one of the most memorable wildlife stories in California history through the eyes of an imagined next generation.

In 1985, a roughly 40-foot humpback whale nicknamed Humphrey made an extraordinary wrong turn into San Francisco Bay and continued into the Sacramento River, eventually traveling deep into the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. His journey brought crowds to Rio Vista and sparked an unprecedented rescue effort involving scientists, local boaters, government agencies and military vessels. After weeks in the Delta, Humphrey was successfully guided back toward the Pacific and out through the Golden Gate.

Forty years later, Humphrey remains part of Rio Vista's identity. A monument commemorating the legendary whale stands in the community, and his story continues to be remembered as a remarkable moment when an entire region came together around an unexpected visitor.
