Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach is making waves in the fight against ocean pollution with the debut of their latest innovation, the Jellyfishbot. This remotely controlled device has the ability to remove up to 100 pounds of debris from water in a single mission. To celebrate its launch, the City hosted an art and naming contest for local youth, with over 60 submissions received.
On Saturday, December 7th, community members are invited to attend an awards ceremony and celebration event at Pierpoint Landing. The event will take place between Pierpoint Landing and the Aquarium of the Pacific from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is free for all attendees.
The ceremony will begin at noon and will announce three winners of the Jellyfishbot Youth Art Contest. The first place winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship package from sponsors Intex Recreation Corporation and Long Beach Container Terminal, as well as having their design displayed on the Jellyfishbot at the event. Two runners-up will also be announced and will receive prize packages generously donated by sponsors.
In addition to the awards ceremony, there will be plenty of fun activities for attendees to participate in. City staff will be on hand to provide opportunities for guests to operate and learn more about the Jellyfishbot. An art display featuring all contest submissions will also be available for viewing.

The celebration will also include live steel drum music and a resource fair featuring educational booths from various organizations such as El Dorado Nature Center's Adopt A Beach program, Aquarium of the Pacific, Algalita, Long Beach Container Terminal, Long Beach City Employees Federal Credit Union, and Intex Recreation Corporation. Attendees can learn more about these organizations' efforts in waste reduction and sustainability.
One highlight of the event will be announcing the winning submission for the Jellyfishbot naming contest. This unique opportunity allowed local youth to put their creativity to use by coming up with a name for the innovative device.
Paid parking will be available at the Aquarium of the Pacific parking structure on Shoreline Drive between Chestnut Place and Aquarium Way. For media inquiries, please contact Jane Grobaty, Community Information Officer for the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine at 562.570.3233 or Jane.Grobaty@longbeach.gov.
