Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach will hold a virtual community meeting Nov. 18 to update residents on the first segment of the proposed Sorrento Trail, a shoreline path planned for Naples Island.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Public Works staff will discuss the project's background, proposed improvements, anticipated construction schedule and potential impacts, and answer questions, the city said.
The project proposes an approximately 425-foot waterside trail along Naples Island, between 5425 and 5455 Sorrento Drive. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2027, with Segment One expected to be completed in fall 2027, according to the city.
Also known as the Sorrento Alamitos Bay Shoreline Trail, the project stems from a California Coastal Commission requirement tied to its 2013 approval of the first phase of the Naples Island Seawall Repair project. The commission directed the city to pursue a local coastal development permit for a public walkway in an existing 15-foot-wide public right-of-way along the island's northwest shoreline.

The requirement was intended to protect and enhance public access to Alamitos Bay while addressing access and recreational impacts associated with the seawall improvements, the city said.
The city began community outreach and site analysis in 2015, including stakeholder interviews and an open house. Residents were invited to comment on possible trail alignments, materials, lighting, accessibility, privacy treatments and improvements to existing accessways between Sorrento Drive and the shoreline.
The commission later required the trail to be built in phases in coordination with the seawall project. Segment One must be completed and open to the public before the city can advance the next seawall phase, which is in the design stage, according to the city.
The city says the completed trail will provide an accessible coastal pathway connecting the Naples community with the Alamitos Bay waterfront.
