~ The City of Long Beach is gearing up for the holiday season with a special event that aims to bring the community together. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine will be hosting the Whoville Winter Village, a free family-friendly event that also serves as a Neighbor-to-Neighbor activation to promote community connection.
According to Mayor Rex Richardson, while the holidays are typically a time for celebration and spending time with loved ones, it can also be a lonely time for some. As part of their Westside Promise initiative and Neighbor-to-Neighbor program, the city is committed to providing opportunities for residents to come together and build stronger connections with their neighbors.
The Whoville Winter Village will take place on Saturday, December 14th from 11am to 3pm at Silverado Park. Families and friends are invited to join in on the festivities which include carnival games, crafts, cookie decorating, face painting, balloon twisting, snow activities, sledding and even photo opportunities with Santa Claus and The Grinch.

This event is just one of many organized by Long Beach's Neighbor-to-Neighbor program. Led by the city's Office of Sustainability and part of California Volunteers network, these events aim to empower Californians to make a positive impact in their communities. By bringing neighbors together through various activities and initiatives, the program hopes to strengthen communities locally.
The Neighbor-to-Neighbor program was launched in September 2024 with funding from a $500,000 grant from the State of California through California Volunteers. The focus of this fund is to expand volunteer infrastructure in California and support the statewide Neighbor-to-Neighbor network. The City of Long Beach was selected as one of nine partner agencies through a competitive process.
Residents who are interested in participating in the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program can visit their website for more information and a calendar of upcoming events. For those looking forward to attending the Whoville Winter Village Festival, they can contact 562.570.1675 for more details. This event promises to be a fun and engaging way for families and friends to come together and celebrate the holiday season while also promoting community connection.
