The Postpartum Anxiety Cheat Sheet helps recognize that postpartum distress does not always look like depression.
NEWHALL, Calif. - Californer -- After a lifetime of being ignored, postpartum depression is finally being addressed and taken seriously. But what about postpartum anxiety? Journalist Katie Grant's new book, The Postpartum Anxiety Cheat Sheet: Because You've Got Two Minutes and a Baby on Your Hip! is the ultimate resource for new mothers. Drawing on years of writing about parenting and her own struggles after her daughter's birth, The Postpartum Anxiety Cheat Sheet is an accessible, easy-to-read guide every mom should have at their fingertips.
"Having gone through the trenches after I had my daughter," says Grant, "I realized there weren't really any quick, convenient resources addressing how so many moms feel in the months immediately after giving birth. Living with postpartum anxiety is frightening and isolating. For me, it felt like an alarm system that became stuck on high alert. I was constantly scanning for danger even when no immediate threat existed. I'm not a doctor, but I knew if my story, along with my years of knowledge from working in the parenting space, could help just one new mom realize she wasn't crazy or alone, then it was all worth it."

Through personal stories, humor, exercises, outside resources, quotes from other mothers, and "MOMtras," the book helps readers identify postpartum anxiety and find ways to respond. Rather than creating another lengthy parenting manual, Grant designed the book for life in the fourth trimester: short stretches of time, a baby in your arms, and a brain that may feel overloaded.
New mothers are surrounded by images of blissful bonding, perfect nurseries, and effortless parenting. Grant also addresses one of the most difficult aspects of mental health after childbirth: shame. She writes about the gulf between that idealized version of motherhood and the reality of feeling terrified, isolated, exhausted, or unable to understand what is happening inside one's own mind. The Postpartum Anxiety Cheat Sheet focuses on postpartum anxiety and mothers who may be saying, "I'm not depressed, so why do I feel like this?"
