AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 11, 2024 ~ As the holiday season approaches, travelers are bracing themselves for potential delays caused by Mother Nature. In order to help holiday travelers prepare for these disruptions, Upgraded Points, a travel website, has conducted a survey to determine the U.S. airports most impacted by weather-related delays.
The survey, which was based on historical data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), examined delays from November through January. This time period was chosen as it is typically when holiday travel is at its peak. The study also looked at year-round delays and the 10 largest U.S. airlines to identify the carriers and airports most prone to weather-related delays.
According to Keri Stooksbury, editor-in-chief at Upgraded Points, "the weather is often a major culprit" when it comes to holiday travel delays. She adds that the survey aims to help travelers anticipate and better manage these setbacks.
The top five most weather-delayed airports for holiday travel were revealed in the survey. Topping the list is San Francisco International Airport (SFO) with a weather-related delay rate of 42.3%. This can be attributed to foggy conditions in December, which account for over half of all delays at this airport during the holiday season.

Following closely behind is Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) with a delay rate of 42.1%. The East Coast airport faces similar challenges with intense winter storms causing most of its delays during this time period.
In third place is LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York with a delay rate of 38.3%. The East Coast's unpredictable winter weather often leads to unavoidable delays during the holidays.
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) takes fourth place on the list with a delay rate of 38.1%. The persistent rain and fog in November contribute to delays during peak holiday travel times.
Rounding out the top five is Boston's Logan International Airport (BOS) with a delay rate of 31.3%. The cold and stormy conditions in New England during the winter months make it a challenging airport for holiday travelers.
On the other hand, the survey also revealed the top five least weather-delayed airports for holiday travel. Topping this list is Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu with a delay rate of only 11%. This airport is an ideal choice for travelers seeking a hassle-free holiday getaway.

In second place is William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) in Houston with a delay rate of 12.3%. The clear skies in Houston make it a top spot for on-time departures during the holiday season.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) takes third place on the list with a delay rate of 12.4%. The reliably sunny weather in Southern California keeps delays low at this airport.
Dallas Love Field (DAL) in Texas maintains a low weather-related delay rate of 12.7%, making it a reliable option for holiday travel. Tied for fifth place are San Diego International Airport (SAN) and Miami International Airport (MIA), both with a delay rate of 13.1%.
For complete data on all airlines and airports studied, including the airlines and months with the most/least weather-related flight delays year-round, please visit Upgraded Points' website.
In conclusion, as holiday travel approaches, it is important for travelers to be aware of potential weather-related delays at certain airports. By using this survey as a guide, travelers can better prepare and manage any disruptions that may occur during their holiday travels.
