SACRAMENTO ~ On November 20, 2023, Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis issued a proclamation declaring the day as "Transgender Remembrance Day" in California. The proclamation was issued to honor and commemorate those who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence and their loved ones.
Kounalakis stated that despite progress towards inclusion and equality, members of the LGBTQ+ community still face violence, discrimination, and structural barriers on a regular basis. She also noted that California's strength comes from its diverse population and committed to creating a safer, more inclusive future for all Californians.

In commemoration of Transgender Day of Remembrance, the transgender pride flag will be raised over the State Capitol. Kounalakis concluded by expressing her commitment to stand with the transgender community and demand equal rights and safety for all.
