~ Sacramento, California - In recognition of California's leadership in the global fight against climate change, Governor Gavin Newsom has been selected as co-chair of the COP30 Local Leaders Forum. This forum brings together mayors, governors, and subnational leaders from around the world to drive momentum ahead of the COP30 negotiations.
The announcement was made today by Governor Newsom himself, who expressed his pride in being chosen as a mobilizing leader for this important event. As co-chair, he will work towards strengthening collaboration and showcasing a shared commitment towards climate targets.
The forum is set to convene in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil ahead of the COP30 negotiations in Belém in November. It is co-hosted by the COP30 Presidency and Bloomberg Philanthropies and will bring together hundreds of mayors, governors, and subnational leaders to deliver on global climate priorities.

Governor Newsom emphasized the crucial role that local leaders play in addressing the climate crisis. He stated that "addressing the climate crisis starts at the local level" and that regional leaders are uniquely positioned to turn ambition into action. He also highlighted that subnational governments are stable, innovative, and indispensable partners in tackling this pressing issue.
Michael R. Bloomberg, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions and Founder of Bloomberg L.P. and Bloomberg Philanthropies, also spoke about the importance of local leaders in fighting against climate change.
