Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach is taking a proactive approach to promoting health and wellness in the community by hosting a free event for middle school-aged youth. In partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) will be hosting a community wellness event at MacArthur Park on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event aims to celebrate health in local parks, connect neighbors, and promote resources that support the wellbeing of middle school-aged youth. Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his commitment to providing recreational spaces and opportunities for the community's youth to thrive. "Through this Neighbor-to-Neighbor community wellness event, we are connecting neighbors, strengthening our community and creating healthier futures for our young residents," he stated.
Attendees can look forward to networking with local businesses, community groups, and service providers who are dedicated to supporting the health of local youth and promoting overall community wellbeing. Information booths will be set up where attendees can learn more about available programs and resources for youth and families. Additionally, there will be a Mobile Recess Play Zone where youth can engage in fun and active play opportunities designed to get them moving. The event will also feature interactive activities and planting kits provided by Dr. Leila Yoonessi from MY Pediatrics and Respiratory Care Clinic.

This event aligns with the City's goal of developing programming that encourages physical activity and social engagement in parks for middle school-aged youth. Earlier this year, the City conducted a survey among middle school students aged 11-14 to gather feedback on how local parks can better support their health and wellbeing through enhanced resources and programs. The insights gathered from both the survey and the wellness event will be used to create a program that caters specifically to the needs and desires of participants, resulting in a more impactful and enjoyable experience that not only promotes physical activity but also fosters a sense of community and connection with nature.
This initiative is in line with PRM's Strategic Plan goal (4-1-A) and the City's Youth and Emerging Adults Strategic Plan Goal 1, which both aim to encourage medical professionals to recommend spending time in parks when appropriate.
