~ SACRAMENTO - Governor Gavin Newsom has announced several key appointments to important positions within the state government. These appointments, made on August 19, 2025, include Kristin M. García as General Counsel at the California Health and Human Services Agency, Maria Blaze to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, and Leisa Biggers to the Commission on Judicial Performance.

Kristin M. García, a Democrat from Washington D.C., has been appointed as General Counsel at the California Health and Human Services Agency. With a strong background in law and public service, García brings a wealth of experience to this role. She has previously served as Staff Counsel at the National Education Association and as Interim General Counsel at Rise Up: Federal Workers Legal Defense Network. In addition, she has held positions at various government agencies including the United States Department of Labor and the California Labor Commissioner's Office.

Maria Blaze, also a Democrat from San Jose, has been appointed to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors. Blaze is currently serving as Student Trustee at Foothill-De Anza Community College District and Legislative Affairs Director for Region IV of the Student Senate of California Community Colleges. She also holds positions with various organizations focused on civic engagement and immigrant rights.

Leisa Biggers, registered without party preference from Los Angeles, has been appointed to the Commission on Judicial Performance. With a strong background in human resources and diversity management, Biggers brings valuable expertise to this role. She has previously held positions at Los Angeles Community College District and El Camino Community College District.

These appointments do not require Senate confirmation and come with varying levels of compensation. García will receive $227,280 for her role as General Counsel while Blaze will receive $100 per diem for her position on the Board of Governors. Biggers' position on the Commission on Judicial Performance does not come with any compensation.
