~ SACRAMENTO - In a recent press release, Governor Gavin Newsom has once again urged the Legislature to pass a viable proposal that would save Californians over $1 billion every year in energy costs. This proposal, which has gained support from a diverse coalition of clean energy, environmental, and labor advocates, aims to expand regional power markets in order to lower energy costs, reduce air and climate pollution, and prevent power outages.

The Governor's call for action comes after studies have shown that implementing this proposal this year could result in significant economic benefits for the state. Governor Newsom stated, "I'm calling on the Legislature to pass a viable proposal to expand regional power markets - it's our best shot at affordability this year. Over $1 billion in economic benefits to our state is on the line and failure to get this done will mean higher electric bills, more pollution and a less reliable power grid. Californians deserve action now to make their electric bills more affordable."

Earlier this month, Governor Newsom met with the coalition of supporters and expressed his gratitude for their efforts in advancing this plan to integrate California's power grid with the rest of the West.

California has long been a leader in addressing climate change and promoting clean energy. The state has seen a 20% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions since 2000 while also experiencing a 78% increase in GDP during that same time period. Additionally, California set a record by using two-thirds clean energy in 2023 and has achieved 100% clean electricity for part of each day this year.

Under Governor Newsom's administration, there has been significant progress in battery storage with an increase of over 15,000 megawatts - an impressive 1,900% growth. The electric grid has also seen an addition of over 25,000 megawatts of new resources.

In other news announced by Governor Newsom's office, nearly two-dozen new TV projects are expected to bring in $1.1 billion to California's economy thanks to the Governor's expanded Film and Television Tax Credit Program. This program has seen a near 400% increase in applications and will include new shows from Hulu, Larry David, and Lionsgate's Emmy-nominated "The Studio."

Governor Newsom also announced several appointments, including Adam Brezine as Chief Counsel at the California High-Speed Rail Authority. Brezine has been a Legal Director at Adobe Inc. since 2022 and has served in various legal roles throughout his career.

As California continues to face extreme heat and critical fire weather, Governor Newsom has emphasized the state's aggressive response to these challenges. With over 74,000 lightning strikes since Friday, the state remains on high alert for potential fires. However, thanks to predeployment strategies, the majority of fire starts have been contained to under 10 acres.

Governor Newsom's dedication to addressing climate change and promoting clean energy is evident through his actions and proposals. With support from a diverse coalition of advocates, it is hoped that the Legislature will pass this critical power grid proposal in order to benefit millions of Californians and create a more sustainable future for the state.
