~ Sacramento - Governor Gavin Newsom has been busy signing a number of bills into law, as announced in a press release on September 12, 2024. These new laws cover a range of topics, from transportation and veterans affairs to property taxation and alcoholic beverage control.
One of the bills signed by the Governor is AB 1853, introduced by Assemblymember Carlos Villapudua (D-Stockton), which focuses on investments for surplus money in the San Joaquin Regional Transit District. Another bill, AB 1879 by Assemblymember Mike Gipson (D-Carson), deals with property taxation filing.
Assemblymember Villapudua also had two other bills signed into law - AB 1940, which addresses beer returns for alcoholic beverages, and AB 1953, which sets weight limits for vehicles. The Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs also had a bill signed - AB 1994 - which pertains to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Other bills signed by Governor Newsom include AB 2067 by Assemblymember Diane Dixon (R-Newport Beach) regarding service of process for financial institutions, AB 2231 by Assemblymember Mike Gipson (D-Carson) concerning education for pawnbrokers, and AB 2873 by Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) which provides grants for the Breaking Barriers to Employment Initiative.

In addition to signing these bills into law, Governor Newsom also vetoed one bill - SB 1432 by Senator Anna Caballero (D-Merced) - which dealt with health facilities and seismic standards.

In other news, Governor Newsom has also been focused on cracking down on retail and property crime in California. He recently signed a bill known as the "smash-and-grab" bill, which strengthens felony sentences for large-scale theft offenses. This is part of a larger legislative package aimed at addressing organized retail and property crime.
Furthermore, the state has distributed over $267 million to local law enforcement agencies and prosecutors to combat these types of crimes. In just the first six months of the grant cycles, over 6,900 criminals have been arrested.
Governor Newsom has also declared a state of emergency in response to the Bridge and Airport fires in Southern California. He visited the Line Fire Incident Command Post to assess the situation and provide support for those affected by the wildfires.
As Governor Newsom continues to work on important issues facing California, he remains committed to making positive changes and addressing pressing concerns for the state and its residents.
