~ Sacramento, CA - Governor Gavin Newsom has declared September 17, 2024 as "Constitution Day and Citizenship Day" in a proclamation issued today. This day marks the celebration of the United States Constitution, which has served as the foundation of our nation's government for over two centuries.
Crafted through compromise and collaboration, the Constitution has brought together the diverse interests of America's states and derives its power from the people. As we recognize this important milestone in our history, we also reflect on the fact that for many years, fundamental rights and freedoms were denied to large portions of our population.
Governor Newsom pays tribute to those who have fought for equality and freedom throughout our nation's history. He acknowledges their leadership and sacrifices that have brought us closer to realizing the founding ideals of our country.
However, Governor Newsom also reminds us that progress should never be taken for granted. In light of recent efforts to undo hard-won victories and divide our nation, it is crucial to remain steadfast in protecting the promise of democracy. The governor urges all citizens to strive towards living out the meaning of "e pluribus unum" - out of many, one.
