~ Sacramento, CA - Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a State of Emergency for Calaveras County in response to the Gann Fire. The fire, which started on August 3, 2026, has burned over 10,300 acres and forced the evacuation of 1,473 residents with an additional 1,400 under evacuation warnings.
The proclamation enables the state to provide additional support and resources to assist with response and recovery efforts and protect public health and safety. This includes authorizing the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and other state agencies to coordinate closely with local partners and suspend public contracting rules for emergency response resources.
The Gann Fire was first reported just before 5:30 PM near Hogan Dam Road and Gann Road near Valley Springs in Calaveras County. It has since threatened homes, structures, and critical infrastructure such as transmission and distribution lines that provide power to large portions of Northern Calaveras County.

Governor Newsom expressed his gratitude for the brave first responders who are risking their lives to protect residents and battle the flames. He also commended local officials, volunteers, and community organizations for their tireless efforts in establishing shelters, assisting neighbors, and caring for those in need.
In addition to state resources, California has also secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help suppress the fire and protect life and property in Calaveras County.
Residents are urged to stay informed by listening to local officials for evacuation information. Those asked to evacuate should not wait but leave immediately. Evacuation details can be found on oes.calaverasgov.us or by signing up for local emergency alerts at ready.ca.gov. Shelters are also available for those affected by the Gann Fire.
Governor Newsom also announced appointments today including Kaitlan Sakuma as an Intern for the California Student Aid Commission and signed two bills into law, AB 1919 and AB 1923.
The Trump administration's recent decision to weaken broadcast media ownership protections was also addressed by Governor Newsom. He stated that this is just one of many decisions that are chipping away at the foundations of democracy.
