~ Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom celebrated Earth Day today at California State University, Chico's Center for Regenerative Agriculture and Resilient Systems. The event, which was attended by students from the center, highlighted the role of higher education in preparing the next generation of California's climate and agricultural stewards.
During the event, First Partner Siebel Newsom emphasized the connection between higher education and the California Farm to School initiative. This initiative has provided nearly half of California's school-age students with school meals made from locally-grown ingredients and has also offered educational programming about the origin and impact of their food on the sustainability of the planet.
Governor Newsom praised innovative programs like the one at Chico State for building future leaders who are learning how to farm in ways that protect the planet and promote a more sustainable future. He stated, "This is what climate action looks like – real investments today that will lead to a healthier, more sustainable tomorrow."

At Chico State, students are being equipped with the knowledge and skills to become environmental stewards of tomorrow. Through initiatives like California Farm to School, young people across the state are being connected to their food, land, and climate solutions. First Partner Siebel Newsom encouraged young people by saying, "We need you, we believe in you, and together we will build a sustainable, resilient future."
In other news related to education, Governor Newsom welcomed students, teachers, and parents back as Palisades Charter High School resumed in-person instruction at a new temporary site in Santa Monica. This comes after all eight public schools that were damaged in recent fires have now returned to learning in person.
Additionally, Governor Newsom launched a first-of-its-kind tool for education and career planning called the Cradle-to-Career Data System. This system displays key milestones in students' experiences over time and provides insights about education and career pathways.
In recognition of the importance of preserving our natural environment, Governor Newsom also proclaimed April 21, 2025 as "John Muir Day" in the State of California. John Muir, a Scottish immigrant, was a pioneer in environmental conservation and helped pave the way for future generations to appreciate and protect our planet.
As California continues to prioritize education and sustainability, these recent events serve as a reminder of the state's commitment to preparing the next generation for a brighter future.
