~ SACRAMENTO - In response to the devastating wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles County, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that the state will be providing tax relief to impacted businesses. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) has automatically extended the sales and use tax filing deadline for three months for taxpayers within Los Angeles County. This extension will give businesses until April 30, 2025, to file their taxes.

This announcement comes on the heels of another relief measure announced by the state, which grants taxpayers in Los Angeles County a postponement until October 15, 2025, to file their California tax returns for 2024 income. This extension also applies to any tax payments that would have been due between January 7, 2025, and October 15, 2025.

Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of supporting businesses during this difficult time. He stated, "California is taking greater action to continue supporting businesses that have been devastated by the Southern California wildfires. We are strong because of the diversity of our businesses, and we stand by them - providing relief to aid them through this difficult time."

The CDTFA will also be offering relief and extensions beyond Los Angeles County upon request. This includes providing relief from interest and penalties as well as creating flexible payment plans for affected businesses.

Government Operations Agency Secretary Amy Tong expressed her concern for those impacted by the fires and reassured them that the government is working to support them. She stated, "We have the operational building blocks in place to make sure government is there for all Californians. We care deeply about everyone affected, and we're making sure that our business foundation remains strong and vibrant."

CDTFA Director Nick Maduros also urged impacted business owners to reach out for assistance with any CDTFA program they may need help with. He stated, "The loss resulting from these fires is devastating for business owners who have invested so much and worked so hard to succeed. Beyond the automatic extension, we encourage taxpayers who need help with any CDTFA program to reach out to us. Our team members are here to help taxpayers navigate their way to recovery."

The CDTFA's disaster relief measures include extensions for filing returns, additional relief from interest and penalties, free copies of tax records, and assistance with updating account information. However, it is important to note that annual licensing fees under the Cigarette and Tobacco Products Licensing Act and returns due under the International Fuel Tax Agreement are not extended.

In addition to providing tax relief, Governor Newsom has also taken action to support recovery efforts in Los Angeles County. He recently signed an executive order directing fast action to clear debris and prepare for potential mudslides and flooding. The state has also deployed an additional 1,000 California National Guard service members to assist with the fires.

Governor Newsom has been on the frontlines of the firefight, meeting with first responders and touring the devastation caused by the wildfires. He stated, "The Governor spent the day in Los Angeles visiting with first responders and touring devastation from the hurricane-force firestorm." The state is committed to supporting those affected by these disasters and will continue to provide assistance as needed.
