City of Long Beach Extends Activation of Inclement Weather Shelter Through Sunday Evening

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach has announced an extension of the activation of its Inclement Weather Shelter, located at the Multi-Service Center, for people experiencing unsheltered homelessness. This decision comes amid ongoing poor air quality related to the Los Angeles County fires.

The shelter, which is located at 1301 W. 12th St., will remain open through Sunday night, Jan. 12. It will then close temporarily and reopen on Monday, Jan. 13 at 9 a.m., resuming its normal operating hours on Tuesday, Jan. 14 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

According to city officials, the Inclement Weather Shelter is an emergency overnight shelter that is available during extreme weather conditions. Check-in begins at 5 p.m. each day and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no registration required. The shelter can accommodate up to 60 people and offers separate sleeping areas for men and women.

In addition to providing a safe place to sleep, the shelter also offers various amenities and services such as cots and blankets, hot dinner and breakfast meals, restrooms and hygiene supplies, as well as access to supportive services through the Multi-Service Center.

The Inclement Weather Shelter has been in operation since Jan. 7 and will continue to be activated until further notice.

To ensure that those experiencing homelessness are aware of this opportunity for shelter, Homeless Services Bureau staff will continue conducting outreach efforts in the community. Information about the shelter is also being shared with registered participants of the City's text alert system.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for text alerts about available resources by texting "HOME" or "HOGAR" (for Spanish) to 99411.

The City also reminds residents of potential unhealthy air quality due to multiple fires in Los Angeles County that are producing heavy smoke.
