~ Sacramento - On September 3, 2026, the state of California mourned the loss of feminist icon Gloria Steinem. Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom released a statement expressing their condolences and honoring Steinem's legacy.
"Gloria Steinem was a force of nature," the statement read. "She was a fierce advocate for women's rights and human rights, and a deeply empathetic leader and friend." The Governor and First Partner praised Steinem for her dedication to creating a world where everyone could be themselves without limitations.
Steinem's impact was far-reaching, as she marched with farmworkers, stood with civil rights leaders, and fought to ensure that the feminist movement included all women, regardless of race, sexual orientation, or occupation. She was known for her continuous learning and evolution as well as her unwavering hope for the future.
The statement also highlighted Steinem's leadership style, which was rooted in community and inclusivity. She welcomed everyone under her tent of mentorship and advocacy. "She will be remembered as one of the most iconic and impactful leaders of our time," the Governor and First Partner stated.

Both Newsom and Siebel Newsom considered themselves lucky to have known Steinem personally. "She inspired us both and countless people around the world," they said. "She will be missed."
In other news, Governor Newsom announced that California's efforts to combat organized retail theft have resulted in over 36,000 arrests since its inception. The state-funded local agencies have also recovered over $293 million worth of stolen goods.
Additionally, on September 2nd, it was reported that nearly 15,300 illegal hemp products were removed from store shelves in California. The state has also cracked down on prohibited kratom and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) products with a compliance rate reaching over 99%.
The regulated cannabis market in California has also been successful, generating $8.4 billion in tax revenue since 2018. This revenue has supported various programs, including childcare, youth substance abuse prevention, medical research, and environmental initiatives.
Governor Newsom's administration continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of Californians by enforcing laws and cracking down on illicit operators. These efforts have not only resulted in significant arrests and recovered goods but also in substantial revenue for the state.
