Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach is excited to announce the grand opening celebration of the new Junipero Beach Sports Court, located at 2630 E. Ocean Blvd. The event will take place on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at 4 p.m. and will feature remarks from Mayor Rex Richardson, Second District Councilwoman Cindy Allen, and other city leaders. The celebration will include a ceremonial ribbon cutting and open use of the new amenities.
According to Mayor Richardson, the Junipero Beach Sports Court is more than just a recreational space; it is a symbol of community connection and the city's commitment to providing vibrant and healthy spaces for all residents. He expressed his gratitude for the community's patience and enthusiasm for this project and is thrilled to see it come to life with upgraded amenities that will offer fun and new ways to stay active on the beautiful coastline.
The Junipero Beach Sports Court project is part of Elevate '28, a five-year infrastructure initiative aimed at revitalizing parks and community facilities while improving accessibility and transportation throughout Long Beach. This project enhances recreational opportunities at one of Long Beach's iconic coastal locations by adding a dedicated roller-skating area, a full basketball court with integrated seating, and upgrading existing half and full basketball courts.

Councilwoman Cindy Allen shared her excitement for the opening of the Junipero Beach Sports Court, stating that it has been a highly anticipated project. She also thanked the Coastal Commission, Public Works Department, and Parks, Recreation and Marine Department for their hard work in bringing this vision to life. As an avid skater herself, she expressed her joy in seeing Long Beach's first skate park on the sand become a reality.
Managed by the Department of Public Works, construction on this project began in January 2024 and was completed in early March 2025. Originally slated for September 2024, the grand opening was delayed due to unforeseen factors such as the complexities of the custom shade structure and vendor onboarding.
Funding for the Junipero Beach Sports Court project comes from $1 million in Tidelands Capital Improvement funds, which are specifically designated for improvements along the coast, and $150,000 awarded by the National Fish and Wildlife Fund's South Coast Shoreline Parks and Outdoor Recreation Grants Program.
