SAN DIEGO - Californer -- Following the best-selling success of The Villains Club, Divine Feminine Publishing has announced an open call for Zero Gravity: Cozy Tales from Outer Space.
Editors Janina Scarlet and E.M. Noller have described the ideal stories as quirky, compelling, and comforting, all while creating a sense of awe and wonder. Both the title and the theme of creating a cozy tale in the unending vastness of space set the stage for another best seller and immediate cult classic.
Along with more specific guidelines, the editors are encouraging writers to explore the feeling of "curling up with a hot cup of Earl Grey after successfully negotiating with a sentient nebula, narrowly avoiding an interstellar war based on a first-contact misunderstanding, or solving a murder mystery on a busy space station."
"Given the existential dread we are facing on a daily basis, I think it is safe to say that we all need an escape, a retreat, a cozy corner with a comforting embrace," said Dr. Janina Scarlet, founding director of Divine Feminine Publishing. "What better, more fantastical place to escape to than to outer space? This is an opportunity for writers who want to create a whole new world…and then invite us all over for a cup of tea, coffee, or hot cocoa."

As with the rest of Divine Feminine's books and anthologies, a minimum of 50% of the characters in all of its works must be female and/or gender diverse.
"In these dystopian times, I find myself drawn to the golden age of late nineties Star Trek (think Geordi's star-crossed love affair with a holodeck character, Odo catching a thief by transforming into the object being stolen, or Seven of Nine adapting Borg technology to create a life-saving vaccine)," said anthology editor E.M. Noller. "In this collection of cozy space opera, I hope to discover fresh narratives that evoke this particular nostalgia. I want to showcase stories that gently ask us to question worn-out assumptions about war, capitalism, gender, systems of government, etc.—then show us a new vision of what the universe could actually look like; stories to make us daydream about what could be, that germinate new seeds of hope for the future."
The call for submissions is open through August 1, 2026.
