This is the first time in the history of the California Hall of Fame that the entire class is comprised of women, in recognition of their significant contributions to the state's history.
Governor Gavin Newsom, along with First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and the California Museum, made the announcement today. The posthumous class will be honored in a virtual ceremony on Thursday, December 19.
The 18th class includes notable figures such as cook and television personality Julia Child, California's first poet laureate Ina Donna Coolbrith, Olympic gold medalist Vicki Manalo Draves, civil rights activist Mitsuye Endo, primatologist and gorilla conservationist Dian Fossey, civil rights hero Alice Piper, and singer Tina Turner.
"We are very proud to induct the California Hall of Fame's 18th class," said Governor Newsom. "This all-female cohort consists of powerful women who remain beloved cultural icons and civil rights luminaries today, truly embodying the California spirit."
First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom also expressed her excitement for this year's all-women class. "We are thrilled to announce the induction of the first all-women class of honorees into the California Hall of Fame," she said. "These trailblazing women have shattered barriers, challenged societal norms, and driven progress that has transformed California and the world."
