SACRAMENTO ~ On Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Roger Benitez struck down California's law banning the possession of large-capacity firearm magazines. In response, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement condemning the decision and calling for a Constitutional amendment to protect citizens from gun violence.

Newsom argued that Judge Benitez's decision was politically motivated and that it undermined the state's efforts to protect its citizens from gun violence. He noted that California is ranked #1 for gun safety and has a gun death rate 43% lower than the rest of the U.S., thanks in part to its gun laws. He also pointed out that if other states shared California's gun death rate, 140,000 Americans would still be alive today.

The Governor also highlighted the fact that over half of crime guns traced by authorities were purchased in other states, emphasizing the need for federal action on gun control. He concluded his statement by reiterating his call for a Constitutional amendment to ensure that all Americans have the right to protect themselves from gun violence.
