Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach Airport (LGB) has reached a major milestone as Southwest Airlines expands its overnight flight offerings nationwide with the launch of a new daily nonstop service to Baltimore Washington International (BWI). This marks the first red-eye flight offered by Southwest at LGB and strengthens the airport's connectivity to the Eastern United States.
According to Mayor Rex Richardson, this new route is a significant achievement for the city's airport. "It is the first red-eye service from Southwest and an enhancement of our connectivity to the East Coast," he stated. "With Long Beach City tourism still trending upward, we see this new route as a sign for a busy summer season."
Starting June 5, passengers can fly nonstop from LGB to BWI on a flight that departs at 8:45 p.m. and arrives at 5 a.m. local time the next day. The return flight departs BWI at 1:20 p.m. local time and arrives back at LGB at 3:45 p.m. This exact itinerary will be available for booking until August 5, when Southwest plans to modify its departure and arrival times for the fall and winter seasons. The LGB-BWI flight is expected to become seasonal in 2026.

To celebrate the inaugural flights to and from Maryland, travelers were treated to local experiences at their destinations. Passengers arriving in Baltimore were greeted with performances by members of the Sea Funk Brass Band as part of Long Beach Airport's LGB Live! music series. They also received coupons for Long Beach tourist attractions and other memorabilia.
On the other hand, passengers heading to BWI were given gift bags containing sleep masks for their red-eye flight, Baltimore-made candies, and other commemorative souvenirs. They also had the opportunity to try an Orange Crush, which was recently designated as Maryland's official state cocktail by the legislature.
"We pride ourselves in offering the easiest and most convenient travel experience in the country," said Airport Director Cynthia Guidry. "That's why our passengers enjoyed a taste of both Long Beach and Baltimore at the inaugural flight celebration hosted at America's Coolest Airport™."
LGB, now officially trademarked as America's Coolest Airport™, provides a stress-free journey and first-class customer experience with service from Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. The airport's carriers offer nonstop flights to 22 airports nationwide, including Hawaii, with one-stop service to nearly 400 cities around the world.
