"It's critical to involve local people in conservation efforts," OURF Director Dr. Gary Shapiro explains. "The new Student Sponsorship Program will keep the OCS thriving in the years ahead."

Potential donors can learn about six exceptional students who represent the entire scholarship program. The students were nominated by the implementing organizations that locally promote and manage the OCS.

"When you sponsor a student, you'll receive a student biography and and an e-Certificate of Guardianship," Shapiro says. "You can also follow your student's progress as they submit periodic updates on their matriculation."

Patterned after the orangutan adoption programs, funds collected by this program will be used to support all of the students who are receiving fiscal support.

About the Orang Utan Republik Foundation

The mission of the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) is to save the critically endangered orangutans from extinction by supporting, coordinating and facilitating conservation education, outreach programs, and other innovative collaborative projects in the species' host country of Indonesia. Established as the Orang Utan Republik Education Initiative in 2004, OURF received its foundation status in 2007.

OURF seeks to transform the attitudes, values and beliefs of local Indonesians who impact wild orangutan populations in culturally appropriate ways such that they become the caretakers of the species and their rain forest habitat.
