Retro-Bit Announces Legendary Shoot 'em Up R-Type DX as its First Game Boy Color Release

MONTCLAIR, Calif. - Californer -- Retro-Bit® Publishing revealed today the upcoming release of R-Type DX, a brand-new physical collector's edition available for the Game Boy Color, also compatible with the original Game Boy in a limited form without the additional DX game content. The publishing imprint of Retro-Bit®, also announced a companion R-Type DX Soundtrack, sold separately, available on both CD and vinyl. Pre-orders for both the game and soundtrack are now open and will run through November 1st 2026.

First released on Game Boy Color in 1999, R-Type DX brings two of Irem's most popular arcade shoot 'em ups together in one explosive package. This critically acclaimed compilation features five games in one, including both the original Game Boy ports of R-Type and R-Type II, as well as upgraded versions enhanced with color graphics and redrawn sprites. Players looking for the ultimate R-Type challenge can take on the DX mode, an exclusive remixed version that seamlessly combines the first two games into one unforgettable experience.

This upcoming limited-edition package is set to include a plasma cartridge for play on both the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, as well as a full-color instruction manual and a deluxe numbered hard-cover box, featuring the work of anime artist Paul "Otaking" Johnson. The R-Type DX Soundtrack, available as both a compact disc and vinyl LP, will include music that was pulled directly from Game Boy hardware. The soundtrack will feature both the original music along with the newly arranged tracks from R-TYPE DX: Music Encore. Extras include an exclusive interview with Nobuhiro Yoshikawa and brand-new artwork created for both the CD and vinyl soundtracks by Paul "Otaking" Johnson.

R-Type DX marks Retro-Bit® Publishing's first Game Boy Color release. Pre-orders are currently open for both the R-Type DX game and soundtrack and will run through November 1st on Retro-Bit's website and at participating retailers, including Limited Run Games, Castlemania Games, Video Games Plus, PNP Games. The limited-edition Game Boy Color cartridge is priced at $44.99 in the United States ($64.99 in Canada and €49,99 in Europe), while the vinyl soundtrack will retail for $29.99 in the United States ($42.99 in Canada and €39,99 in Europe) and $19.99 in the United States ($27.99 in Canada and €24,99 in Europe) for the CD soundtrack.
