SAN DIEGO - Californer -- "Slip Soul", the debut novel by Taylor García, is set to release August 2nd 2021. "Slip Soul" tells the story of Osvaldo Reyes, a man facing the inhospitable US immigration system.
García blurs borders between short and long prose to amplify the feeling that "Slip Soul" is one of countless true stories from individuals struggling with harsh US immigration policies. Proud of his identity as an American hispano of mestizo descent, García finds it important to understand the US as "once a beautiful tapestry of indigenous people." With this, García says, "it's [the] people decrying immigration whose ancestors were themselves invaders of this land."
García writes "Slip Soul" to show these hypocrisies in US immigration policy with the hopes readers will understand "we are strong because of our diversity."
About the Book
Emigrating from Mexico to San Diego, sixty- something Osvaldo Reyes intends to find his first love, Joanne Watson, a young writer he met when she toured his hometown of Oaxaca City. But when Osvaldo's employer in the United States shuts down due to protests, the clock starts ticking on his visa. He finds work at a local fish taco shop to buy more time in the US, but doesn't know his co-worker is an ICE agent in disguise.
More on The Californer
Osvaldo ends up in an immigrant detention center where he meets Marcos Gomez, a young asylum seeker separated from his family. Osvaldo shares his story with Marcos through flashbacks interspersed by chapters from a manuscript Joanne gave him the last time they met. "Slip Soul"-- the story within the story-- is a metaphysical journey of good versus evil, providing the historical backdrop for Osvaldo and Joanne's lifelong love.
Readers can order "Slip Soul" on August 2nd, 2021 at https://bit.ly/GarcíaSlipSoul. "Slip Soul" will also be available from major book retailers in eBook ($4.99) and paperback ($15.99). Wholesale from Ingram and TouchPoint Press.
