The Canal Arts announces the start of its Peoples of the Canal public art project, the first major mural art project on a public building in San Rafael, and the culminating element of its Peoples of the Canal: A Story of 20,000 Years project.
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Californer -- Funded by Marin County's Nonprofit Partners grant program and other donors, the Peoples of the Canal mural, the work of immigrant artists, Oscar Morales, Vladimir Cuevas and Estefania Garcia, depicts the cultures of San Rafael's largely immigrant Canal, from Coast Miwok presence thousands of years ago to the future, to be created on the social activity center of the Canal, the Albert J. Boro Community Center.
The artists will begin their work on September 26, assisted by artist-members of the Canal community and members of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria. All are welcome to visit as the mural takes form. A gala unveiling party will be announced to celebrate the completion of the project. The Canal Arts, together with the community leadership group Voces del Canal, helps provide Canal families educational opportunities through its monthly "Art Saturdays", gatherings where families create art together, providing a creative outlet for the immigrant rich community.
