~ The sun was shining and the waves were perfect for the highly-anticipated 20th annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon at Del Mar Dog Beach. This event, presented by Blue Buffalo, is not only a fun day at the beach for dogs and their owners, but also a way to raise life-saving funds for orphan pets at Helen Woodward Animal Center.
Over 50 surfing dogs, known as SurFURs and gromMUTTs, were expected to participate in this year's competition. The event kicked off at 8 a.m. PST and will continue until 2 p.m., with various heats and categories for the furry competitors.
One of the highlights of the day was a special ceremony to honor Surf Dog legend Derby California, who was accompanied by his owner Kentucky. Derby California has been a part of this event since its inception and continues to inspire others with his surfing skills.
But the real question on everyone's mind was who would take home the coveted "Best in Surf" title this year? Last year's winner, Petey, was seen in attendance and ready to defend his title against some fierce competition.

The Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon is not just about showcasing talented surfing dogs, but also about raising awareness for adoption. All proceeds from the event go towards supporting orphan pets and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center.
The competition consisted of 10-minute heats where SurFURs showed off their skills on surfboards in front of a panel of judges made up of surf pros and aficionados. They were judged on factors such as length of ride, wave technique, enthusiasm, and confidence on the board. Winners were awarded for each weight class and first-place winners moved on to compete in the finals for "Best-In-Surf."
In addition to traditional surfing heats, there was also a Freestyle Surf Contest where points were awarded for creativity. Two crowd-favorite categories returned this year – Duos & Trios, where two or three dogs surfed on a single board, and Peeps & Pups Tandem Competition, where dogs and their favorite humans caught waves together.

But the fun didn't stop there. Attendees were treated to live beach tunes, a Canine Costume Contest, a free Kid's Activity area with crafts and games, and the BARKet Place featuring pet-focused exhibitor booths. There was also a free agility course for dogs sponsored by San Diego Pet Training.
As the day came to an end, all eyes were on the final heat – "Best in Surf" – which was streamed live on Facebook for those who couldn't attend in person. The winners of this heat and other categories were announced at the exciting awards ceremony.
Helen Woodward Animal Center's Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon is not only a fun day at the beach but also a way to support a great cause. With 100% of proceeds going towards helping orphan pets, it's no wonder this event has become a beloved tradition for dog lovers and surf enthusiasts alike.
