LOS ANGELES - Californer -- BYD (Build Your Dreams) congratulates IndyGo on the start of operations of its rapid Red Line bus service, increasing convenience, frequency, and reliability for residents of the community.
BYD is honored it was selected by IndyGo to provide 13 of its American-made K11 60-foot, articulated, battery-electric buses for this important service. Overall, IndyGo plans to place 31 BYD K11 buses into service by the end of this year. The K11 was developed specifically for rapid transit operation, providing service with less noise and vibration and without emitting a single cloud of exhaust.
Electric buses like those built by BYD in its Lancaster, California plant can remove tons of pollutants from the atmosphere each year they are in service. When a unique and innovative in-ground charging system provided by BYD is installed, the operating range of the buses will be among the best anywhere.
"We are very proud to be part of this new, important service for Indianapolis and Marion County, said Bobby Hill, Vice President of BYD North America, Coach and Bus. "We have worked – and will continue to work – closely with IndyGo to ensure their success. IndyGo is a forward-thinking transit agency and we applaud their transformation to an all-electric transit fleet."

The Red Line will improve travel times and decreasing wait times along a route that runs between Broad Ripple on the north side of the city and the University of Indianapolis on the south side. The service will offer more frequent runs and longer hours along the densest corridor in terms of population and employment within Marion County.
The bus purchases are part of IndyGo's plans to replace all its diesel buses with electric models by 2032; reducing pollution and operating costs, while improving service for Indianapolis residents and visitors.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, each zero-emission bus like those manufactured by BYD, eliminates approximately 10 tons of nitrogen oxides, 350 pounds of diesel particulate matter, and approximately 1,690 tons of CO2 over the 12-year lifecycle of the vehicle.
BYD was the first firm in the world to design and manufacture a 60-foot battery-electric bus. The K11 is an affordable, dependable, and American-manufactured bus that can integrate easily into a transit fleet, offering a clean, zero-emission alternative to diesel-fueled buses. The K11 is powered by revolutionary iron-phosphate batteries that are non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
