~ SACRAMENTO - Governor Gavin Newsom has made several key appointments today, August 6, 2024, to various positions within the state government.
Among the appointments announced by Governor Newsom is Louis "Lou" Butera as the new State Printer at the Department of General Services. Butera brings a wealth of experience to this role, having previously served as Vice President of Operations at Direct Marketing Solutions and Senior Account Executive at Canon Solutions America. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Pepperdine University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Printing Management from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo.
Matt Espenshade has been appointed as the Chief Deputy Inspector General of the Independent Office of Audits and Investigations at the California Department of Transportation. Espenshade's extensive background in audit services includes roles at the Judicial Council of California and the California State Transportation Agency. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.

John Carvelli has been appointed to the California Horse Racing Board. Carvelli brings a diverse background to this position, having previously served as a Partner and Executive Vice President at LIBERTY Dental Plan. He is also involved with various organizations such as The FAMILY San Francisco and the North American Boxing Federation.
In other news, Governor Newsom reported that there have been over 1,000 arrests in Bakersfield since April due to an ongoing enforcement collaboration between the California Highway Patrol and Bakersfield Police Department.
