HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - Californer -- Born and raised in the gritty streets of the South Bronx, John Duffy's life has been anything but ordinary. As a teenager, one of his role models was Bodybuilder Dave Draper. He never fully pursued it, but years later, he became a trainer and aerobic instructor at Jack LaLanne in Scarsdale, NY.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he started working out seven days a week at Gold's Gym and 24-Hour Gym in Venice and Santa Monica.
His former Manager, Nick Stellate from Jack LaLanne, became a friend in the film industry and challenged John to compete in Muscle Beach, offering to train and prepare him for the contest. What a crazy idea at his age, but he is always up for an adventure and a challenge, so he agreed and had three months to prepare. Sometimes John's life is like Forrest Gump's or Forrest Duffy, so tomorrow he adds another experience to his life. He will compete in two divisions, Novice and Age Categories.
The son of a widowed Irish immigrant mother, Duffy overcame poverty, dropped out of high school, and navigated through political activism in his youth before reinventing himself as an actor, counselor, and ultimately a Hollywood film producer and Professor at UCLA.. His career spans fifty feature films, and his unique personal story is as compelling as the movies he produces. Now based in Los Angeles, Duffy is the creator and host of the Live Courageously Podcast, a weekly show featuring transformational conversations with over 95 guests who have defied the odds. With over 90 shows and hours of content, the podcast has become a platform for those seeking grit, purpose, and inspiration. Duffy's story will soon be captured in print through his upcoming memoir, Black Irish: Not Your Average White Boy, set for release later this year. The book promises to be a raw and riveting look into his personal odyssey—from radical youth to respected voice in Hollywood, blending themes of redemption, resilience, courage, and reinvention.
