~ Sacramento, CA - Governor Gavin Newsom has taken a stand against the Trump Administration's misuse of federal agents for political gain. In a press conference held today, Governor Newsom announced that his office will be submitting a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to uncover the motivations behind the administration's use of federal law enforcement at a recent redistricting event.

According to Governor Newsom, President Trump has been using national guard and federal law enforcement personnel as his personal police force and political pawns. This has resulted in these agents being pulled from important enforcement work at the border to instead intimidate political opponents.

"Trump's actions are a dangerous step towards authoritarianism," stated Governor Newsom. "He is following the playbook of despots in countries like Russia and North Korea. We will not back down in our defense of democratic freedom, and the Trump administration should answer for this cowardly behavior."

The FOIA request is seeking all documents, communications, and records related to the decision to send federal agents to a press conference held on August 14 at the Democracy Center in Los Angeles. The event was attended by California's elected officials, including Governor Newsom and congressional and state legislative leaders. The group announced an effort challenging the administration's attempts to rig the upcoming midterm elections.

The request also includes information about the administration's communication with Fox News to embed a reporter and camera crew with the group of ICE agents.

This is not the first time Governor Newsom has taken action against Trump's misuse of federal resources. On August 6, his office submitted a FOIA request for documents related to the deployment of U.S. Marines and National Guard since June 7. The Department of Defense staff testified that this deployment would cost $134 million.

In addition to these actions, Governor Newsom has also made appointments within his administration to strengthen California's response to such situations. Kate Folmar has been appointed as Chief of Strategic Communications at the California High-Speed Rail Authority, and the state has significantly boosted its firefighting capabilities and prevention efforts in response to the record-setting wildfire year in 2020.

As California continues to face challenges from the Trump Administration, Governor Newsom remains committed to protecting the state's democratic values and holding those in power accountable for their actions.
